We really wanted to spend Fall Break in California (or Brazil) but that just wasn't going to happy, so we decided to live it up in Heber instead. We filled our days with swimming and other fun and our evenings with movies together, but our favorite activity was "Crawdad-ing!"
We tried several kinds of bait, but we settled on a rotisserie chicken carcass. We all loved eating the chicken before using it as bait too. The crawdads would crawl right on top of the chicken and we could slowly drag them to shore.
Madelyn was a little creeped out by the crawdads, but she loved collecting the dead ones that had washed ashore. In fact, she brought many of them home to add to our Halloween decorations (outside, or course). She did finally pick up a life one and we had to preserve the moment.
After much time struggling to catch anything, Mckay figured out how to do it. We were so glad to finally have something! Gabe caught on pretty quick though, and a few times he reached right into the water and grabbed one without any bait (see below).
We tossed the crawdads into a pot of boiling water so that we could eat them in garlic butter, yum! The only problem is that you only get about 1/2 a bit of meat with each one, and that's after quite a bit of work. In the end, we were really glad we had eaten the chicken!
I don't think the crawdads are as active in the cold weather, so we'll be heading back to Strawberry Reservoir when the weather warms up to hopefully catch a bunch more!

Fun!! They swim backwards when they're spooked, so we used to take big cups down to the creek and gently place the cup behind them and then swish the water with your hand in front of them. :D Ours also really liked bologna. We'd tie it in little fabric bags, wait for them to pinch it, bring them up out of the water to look at them and then put them back in. :D That's cool that you actually ate them! My Mom never let us try that. :D
Brilliant! where do you come up with this stuff? Seriously, you kids are going to have some of the coolest memories. Love it!
